Brushing teeth is undoubtedly the most effective measure for the prevention of caries and gingivitis. But with a bad toothbrush and the wrong brushing technique you will not get far: With the daily oral hygiene then up to 33 percent of all tooth surfaces remain uncoated and the interdental spaces are not reached. Therefore, only the interaction of a good toothbrush with a proven toothbrushing technique, supplemented by the use of other interdental space care products, for example dental floss and mouthwashes, will help.

Brushing your teeth is important to your health

Whether for children or adults - a systematic cleaning method is important. In no case should be cleaned with high pressure or "scrubbed" back and forth.

The critical areas of brushing teeth are the interdental spaces that are the worst to approach. If they are not sufficiently cleansed of sugar and food leftovers, caries-causing bacteria quickly nourish themselves. The best way to clean your teeth is to use a suitable brushing technique, such as the Bass technique, a method of shaking and rolling with a manual toothbrush.

Bass technique

The bass technique is very easy:

  1. The toothbrush is applied to the gums and teeth at a 45 ° angle.
  2. Press the bristles lightly against the teeth and gums and make small jarring motions of half the tooth width. So the plaque are loosened and removed thoroughly and gently.
  3. Perform at least ten shaking movements per tooth section.

A more effective alternative is to use an electric toothbrush that will perform the vibrations without your intervention.

Whether by hand or electric: Always clean your teeth in the same order - for example, first the outer surfaces, then the inner surfaces and finally the chewing surfaces.

What should I put attention on?

Pressure, duration and technique: The plaster pressure should be about 100 grams.

Tip: Test the right pad pressure with a kitchen scale - you may be surprised how small the pressure is. Decisive for a good cleaning is not the cleaning pressure, but above all the cleaning time and the right cleaning technique.

How often and how long brushing?

It is most effective to brush two to three times a day after meals.

Even if that seems like a long time: To remove all plaque remains, you should at least two to three minutes hold.

Incidentally, recent studies have shown that it is better to wait at least half an hour after a meal, especially after consuming acidic foods like orange juice. The reason: The acid dissolves minerals from the tooth, which the body can usually reinstall. Brushing her teeth, on the other hand, rinses her off for good.
