Diet in multiple sclerosis (MS)

Multiple Sclerosis, MS for short, is a neurological autoimmune disease of the central nervous system. It is also called the Thousand-Faced Disease because multiple sclerosis symptoms and the course of MS are very different and individual. The exact triggers of MS are so far as well as the MS causes unknown. MS is particularly prevalent in industrially developed countries with more temperate climates. In these countries, fatty and oily foods such as meat, sausage cheese and butter are an integral part of the daily diet. Climate, diet and lifestyle therefore seem to shape the disease multiple sclerosis.

Wholesome and healthy

In order to positively influence the course of MS, the diet should be as balanced and wholesome as possible, with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, little meat and fat. This strengthens the immune system and supports the general well-being. But what is a wholesome diet? It is already in the name and means that food consists mainly of whole grains. This concerns bread, flour, rice, pasta and oatmeal. These products belong on the daily menu. They provide the body with sufficient fiber and contain many saturated carbohydrates and hardly any fat.

The selection is large and varied. For example, there are many types and shapes of noodles. It is important to use the Italian form of pasta: these are made of high-quality durum wheat and do not contain eggs. Rice is not the same as rice. Again, there are many variants that differ in appearance as well as taste. Whole grain rice is superior to all types of rice starch, fiber, various vitamins and minerals and therefore particularly recommended.

Vitamins & Co

Fruits and vegetables are an important part of the daily diet. Protein-rich legumes, mushrooms, calcium-rich vegetables (such as leeks, chard, fennel, broccoli, spinach, kale, parsnips), nuts and seeds are particularly recommended. Fruits and vegetables are not only healthy, they also have a positive impact on MS therapy. They contain many vitamins: vitamin C, vitamin E, copper, zinc and ß-carotene have an anti-inflammatory effect.

Prepare the meals gently and preferably at low temperatures. Not only does it provide excellent taste, it also requires less fat. Instead of sugar and salt, try fresh herbs and spices. This ensures a tasteful aroma and at the same time for a healthy change.

Extremely good?

It is thought that certain messenger substances are responsible for the aberrant immune response in MS. These are formed from the polyunsaturated fatty acid arachidonic acid, which is mainly found in animal foods. For this reason, the diet in MS should be limited to a maximum of two meat meals per week. Tofu and soy dishes serve as an optimal alternative. Also avoid sausages and offal. The consumption of eggs should be limited to two egg yolks per week. For dairy products, fat-warm products (such as 1.5% yogurt and milk, 10% cream and skimmed quark) are recommended.

Dietary margarine and vegetable oils (soybean oil, linseed oil, wheat germ oil) are suitable instead of animal fats such as butter, lard and goose fat. Also ideal is argan oil, which contains a high proportion of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are the most important fatty acid for MS and are proven to inhibit the formation of inflammatory substances. In high concentration also many fish species have this fatty acid. An optimal diet includes at least two to three meals a week with fish. The Healthy Diet of Multiple Sclerosis at a Glance:
